Classic BBQ Chicken Thighs Recipe

There’s just something about classic BBQ chicken thighs that brings everyone to the table — no negotiating, no complaining, just clean plates and happy faces.
When I was trying to make dinnertime less chaotic, I started leaning into these simple recipes. The ones where the grill does most of the work, and the flavors are familiar but still so satisfying. These BBQ chicken thighs are seasoned just right, perfectly juicy, and finished with a sticky, caramelized glaze that tastes like summer.
Whether it’s a Tuesday night or you’re feeding a crowd, this one’s a keeper.
Ingredients
-
8 bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs
-
1 tbsp olive oil
-
2 tsp smoked paprika
-
1 tsp garlic powder
-
1 tsp salt
-
½ tsp black pepper
-
1 cup BBQ sauce (your favorite brand or homemade)
Instructions
-
Preheat grill to medium heat (about 375°F).
-
Pat chicken dry with paper towels, then rub with olive oil, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
-
Grill skin-side down for 5–6 minutes to get a good sear. Flip and cook another 5–6 minutes.
-
Lower heat slightly or move chicken to indirect heat. Brush with BBQ sauce and continue grilling for 10–12 more minutes, flipping and brushing with more sauce every few minutes until the internal temperature reaches 175°F and sauce is sticky and caramelized.
-
Let rest 5 minutes before serving.
Sarah’s Tips
-
Bone-in thighs are juicier and harder to overcook — perfect for the grill.
-
Want to make it your own? Try a spicy BBQ sauce or add a splash of apple cider vinegar for extra tang.
-
Serve with grilled corn, potato salad, or coleslaw for a classic summer plate.
