Fun & Easy Donut Drip Cake Recipe

90 min beginner friendly dessert mashup donut cake drip cake fun birthday cake party cake serves 12

This cake was born when I couldn’t decide between donuts and cake for my husband's birthday. So I did both — and stacked them together! It turned into a total crowd-pleaser and looked way more impressive than the effort it took. The best part? You can totally make this with store-bought donuts and still get all the wow-factor.

Ingredients:

For the Cake:

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour

  • 2 ½ tsp baking powder

  • ½ tsp salt

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened

  • 1 ¾ cups sugar

  • 4 eggs

  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract

  • 1 cup milk

Shortcut: 1–2 boxes of vanilla, funfetti, or chocolate cake mix!

For the Frosting:

  • 1 ½ cups unsalted butter, softened

  • 5 cups powdered sugar

  • 2–3 tbsp milk or cream

  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract

  • Optional: pink or pastel gel food coloring

For the Drip Glaze:

  • ½ cup white chocolate chips

  • 2 tbsp heavy cream

  • Food coloring (optional)

For the Donuts:

  • 6–8 mini or regular donuts (store-bought or homemade)

  • Optional: colorful glaze, sprinkles, or drizzle

 Instructions

 1. Bake the Cake:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. Grease and line two 8-inch cake pans.

  3. Mix flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl.

  4. In a large bowl, beat butter and sugar until fluffy.

  5. Add eggs one at a time, then vanilla.

  6. Alternate adding dry mix and milk until smooth.

  7. Pour into pans and bake 25–30 minutes.

  8. Cool completely.

 2. Make the Frosting:

  1. Beat butter until smooth.

  2. Add powdered sugar slowly.

  3. Mix in vanilla and milk until fluffy.

  4. Tint with color if you like — light pink or pastel looks super cute!

 3. Assemble and Frost:

  1. Stack the cooled cake layers with frosting in between.

  2. Frost the entire cake smoothly or with soft texture.

  3. Chill the cake for 15–20 minutes to help the drip set better.

 4. Make the Drip Glaze:

  1. Melt white chocolate chips and heavy cream in the microwave (30 sec bursts).

  2. Stir until smooth. Add color if desired.

  3. Let it cool slightly, then drip it over the top edges of the cake using a spoon or squeeze bottle.

 5. Add the Donuts:

  1. Once the drip has set a little, stack your donuts on top of the cake.

  2. Pile them in a pyramid or circle — totally your style!

  3. Add extra glaze, sprinkles, or drizzle for flair.
