Cute Pastel Cloud Cake Recipe

75 min birthday cake buttercream cake cloud cake pastel cakes serves 12 sky theme cake whipped cream frosting

This cake was inspired by my son’s love for cloud-watching. We made it together one afternoon with soft blue frosting and little whipped cream puffs. It turned out so sweet and peaceful — no stress, just fun. The kind of cake that feels like a hug. Now it’s our go-to for baby showers and “just because” days.

Cloud Cake Recipe

Ingredients:

For the Cake:

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour

  • 2 ½ tsp baking powder

  • ½ tsp salt

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened

  • 1 ¾ cups sugar

  • 4 large eggs

  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract

  • 1 cup milk

Shortcut: 1–2 boxes of white or vanilla cake mix work great too!

For the Blue Buttercream:

  • 1 ½ cups unsalted butter, softened

  • 5 cups powdered sugar

  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract

  • 2–3 tbsp milk

  • Blue gel food coloring (just a drop or two for sky blue)

For the Whipped Cream Clouds:

  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream

  • 1–2 tbsp powdered sugar

  • ½ tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

1. Bake the Cake:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. Grease and line two 8-inch cake pans.

  3. In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.

  4. In another bowl, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

  5. Add eggs one at a time, then mix in vanilla.

  6. Add dry ingredients and milk, a little at a time, and mix until smooth.

  7. Divide batter between pans and bake 25–30 minutes.

  8. Cool completely before decorating.

2. Make the Sky-Blue Buttercream:

  1. Beat butter until creamy.

  2. Slowly add powdered sugar.

  3. Mix in vanilla and milk until light and fluffy.

  4. Add a drop or two of blue gel food coloring and mix for a soft sky-blue tone.

 3. Make the Whipped Cream Clouds:

  1. In a cold bowl, beat heavy cream with powdered sugar and vanilla until it forms stiff peaks.

  2. Keep chilled until ready to use.

4. Decorate the Cake:

Frost the Sky:

  1. Place one cake layer on your cake stand.

  2. Add a layer of blue frosting.

  3. Stack the second layer, then frost the entire cake in blue buttercream.

  4. Smooth out for a calm, sky-like finish.

Add the Clouds:

  1. Use a spoon or a piping bag to add soft clouds with whipped cream. You can place them along the bottom edge of the cake, around the sides, or even on the top for a dreamy sky-like effect.
  2. There’s no need to be perfect—just make the shapes fluffy and a little uneven, like real clouds in the sky! You can dab them on in little mounds or swirl them gently with the back of a spoon.
  3. Optional: Sprinkle on some white sprinkles, shimmer dust, or even add a fondant sun on top to make it extra magical and fun.

Note: You can also use store-bought mini meringues or cotton candy to get that fluffy cloud look with zero effort.
