Air Fryer Sesame Chicken Recipe

If you’re craving something sticky, crispy, and a little bit addicting… this Air Fryer Sesame Chicken is going to be your new weeknight obsession.

I started making this when I wanted that classic takeout sesame chicken flavor—without the deep fryer, the sugar crash, or the greasy feeling after. This version is lightly crisped in the air fryer, tossed in a sweet and savory sesame sauce, and served with rice or veggies for a clean, satisfying meal that actually makes you feel good after.

The best part? It’s done in under 30 minutes and tastes just as good as delivery—maybe better.

Ingredients

For the Chicken:

  • 1 lb boneless, skinless chicken breast, cut into bite-sized pieces

  • 1 tbsp arrowroot powder or cornstarch

  • 1 tbsp olive oil or avocado oil (for tossing)

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For the Sesame Sauce:

  • 1/4 cup coconut aminos or low-sodium soy sauce

  • 1 tbsp honey or maple syrup

  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar

  • 1 tsp sesame oil

  • 1 clove garlic, grated or minced

  • 1 tsp grated fresh ginger (or 1/4 tsp ground)

  • 1 tsp arrowroot powder mixed with 1 tbsp water (to thicken)

To Serve:

  • Sesame seeds

  • Sliced green onions

  • Steamed broccoli, cauliflower rice, or brown rice

Instructions

  1. Prep the chicken: In a bowl, toss the chicken pieces with arrowroot, salt, and pepper. Lightly drizzle or spray with olive oil.

  2. Air fry at 380°F (193°C) for 10–12 minutes, shaking halfway, until golden and cooked through.

  3. Make the sauce: In a small saucepan, combine all sauce ingredients except the arrowroot slurry. Bring to a simmer. Stir in the slurry and cook for 1–2 minutes until thickened.

  4. Toss the chicken in the warm sesame sauce and stir until coated.

  5. Serve hot over rice or veggies. Garnish with sesame seeds and green onions.

Why I Love This Recipe

This is one of my favorite comfort food swaps. It gives you all the sweet-savory flavor of takeout, but with clean ingredients that leave you feeling nourished, not weighed down. It’s also super kid-friendly, freezer-friendly, and works for quick lunches too.

When I first started making these types of clean versions of takeout classics, I realized how simple it really was to eat well—and still eat what I love.
